Concept · Instruktiivi

The instructive

The instructive -in means “with” or “by means of”: omin silmin, with my own eyes; terveisin, with greetings. Adjectives agree with it (parhain terveisin, ystävällisin terveisin). On a verb it ends in -en and means “while doing”: toivottaen, while wishing.

Words and constructions

omin silmin

with my own eyes

Näin sen omin silmin.I saw it with my own eyes.

The case survives mostly in fixed phrases like this one and terveisin, so learn them whole instead of building your own.

Terveisin

Regards

Parhain terveisin

Best regards

Ystävällisin terveisin

Kind regardsformal

Ystävällisin terveisin is the standard sign-off for formal email. Literally “with kindest greetings”.

Hyvää jatkoa toivottaen

Wishing you all the bestformal

Literally “wishing (you) a good continuation”. Hyvää jatkoa! on its own is a very common goodbye, in shops too.

Watch out

Traps

  • It lives in fixed phrases. Learn terveisin and omin silmin whole; to say “by train”, Finnish now uses the adessive, junalla.
  • Terveisin signs a message off; Terveisiä perheellesi sends greetings to someone, in the partitive.
