Concept · Objektin sijaiset määrän adverbiaalit

Measures count like objects

A phrase that says how long, how far or how many times takes the same forms as an object. One whole unit takes -n: ostin kirjan, so odotin tunnin, juoksin kilometrin, kävin siellä kerran. A number takes the partitive after it: kolme kirjaa, so kolme tuntia. Koko counts as one whole: koko päivän. And a negative turns it partitive, as it does an object: en odottanut tuntiakaan, not even an hour.

Words and constructions

G · numeral + PARvuoden / kolme vuotta

for (a length) · год, три года (без предлога)

Olen opiskellut suomea vuoden.I’ve been studying Finnish for a year.

A length counts like an object. One whole unit takes -n, the form the textbook calls G: tunnin, as in luin kirjan. A number takes the partitive: kaksi tuntia, as in kaksi kirjaa. Koko counts as one whole: koko päivän.

Watch out

Traps

  • The -n of vuoden in Olin siellä vuoden is the object form, not a landmark's genitive. Nothing follows it.
  • A negative about a gap up to now is different: En ole käynyt siellä vuoteen. See the time phrases.
